Join the group

“My Groups” is a facebook feature that allows registered members to join, view or create groups, providing another way to connect by common interest.

Each college and university has its own set of groups. For example, Penn State students aren’t able to join, view or create groups at Notre Dame or vice versa because those groups wouldn’t be a part of their branch.

When creating a group, the user is given four options. They can choose to leave it open, closed, by invitation only or by invisible invitation only. This dictates whether or not the group will show up in a general search. Groups also have the choice of uploading an image to represent their group. In the members’ box, individual photos are shown of each of the groups’ members.

Like most groups we know, “My Groups” has groupies. Groupies are not members of the group but know many of the people in the group. The cutoff for being a groupie depends on the size of the group.

While some groups are created for affiliation, as is the case with sororities and fraternities, most groups exist solely for your laughing pleasure. This is why I asked five members of our Weekender staff to browse groups at four local colleges and universities to pick their favorites. Here are the winners:
