The staff at U-T Gardens is making
preparations for its winter season.
V/O
Garden director Susan Hamilton says
winter can be a beautiful time in the
garden because a lot of plants display their
architectural features and become living
pieces of sculpture.
She says winter tree bark is especially
exquisite because its coloring and patterns
give it a more textural look.
Hamilton says some plants are
valuable because their winter berries
and colorful fruit attract birds and other
wildlife to the garden.
Water isn’t a problem for the gardens
during the winter months. But
temperature fluctuations in Northeast
Tennessee cause the staff to lose some
perennials.
Hamilton says the staff uses pine
needles as mulch to blanket the beds to
prevent such loss. PAT: This winter season, the U-T Gardens
will be celebrating Holiday Express. This is
a brand new event all about garden
railroading. It will run on weekends
November twenty-sixth through January
fourth. Admission is five dollars. Children
under four are free.
