This glass is more than half full

Forget Hypercolor T-shirts and mood rings, I’ve got a trend that’s two-toned and doesn’t rely on temperature change for its dramatic look.

Handcrafted in Virginia, Zero Gravity Glass is made with diachronic glass, a material that ArtStreet, USA store owner Tim Mulcahy tells me, gets its name from the Greek language, which literally translates to mean “two colors.” Depending on the angle it’s viewed, the colors of the glass shift back and forth, giving it a two-toned look.

The colors are created by depositing super-thin layers of quartz crystal and metal oxides on the surface of the glass. “One particular color can have as many as 30 distinct layers of these materials, yet the thickness of the coating is a super-thin 35 millionths of an inch,” says Mulcahy.

Products such as cuff bracelets, pendants, paperweights and cufflinks are available in over 25 colors and patterns. Each item combines the diachronic glass with sterling silver for a polished, contemporary look and feel.

You can get your own Zero Gravity Glass item at ArtStreet, USA, located on Pierce Street in Kingston or by shopping their web site www.artstreetusa.com.
